Digital literacy is an important thing needed to participate in today’s modern world. Literacy is now understood as a means of identification, understanding, interpretation, creation, and communication in an increasingly digital, text-mediated, information-rich and fast-changing world. Literacy is a continuum of learning and proficiency in reading, writing and using numbers throughout life and is part of a larger set of skills, which include digital skills, media literacy, education for sustainable development and global citizenship as well as job-specific skills. Literacy skills themselves are expanding and evolving as people engage more and more with information and learning through digital technology.
Today’s young generation has grown up with unlimited access to digital technology and has a different mindset from previous generations. Young people have an increasingly important role to play in improving community literacy. Literacy empowers and liberates people. Beyond its importance as part of the right to education, literacy improves lives by expanding capabilities which in turn reduces poverty, increases participation in the labor market and has positive effects on health and sustainable development. Supporting them in developing the knowledge and skills to do so is a step towards them taking that role.
Along with the international literacy day which falls on September 8, 2024, and in order to celebrate UNIKAL’s 43rd Anniversary, UNIKAL held a Youth International Conference with the theme “The role and contribution of young people in improving community digital literacy for a better world”.
